Ice on Your AC Coil or Lines in Oakland
If the thick insulated line at the condenser has turned white with frost, or ice has built up on the indoor coil, that coil dropped below freezing. Low airflow or low refrigerant is nearly always behind it. Turn the cooling off now and call (510) 288-2541.
Thaw it safely
- Switch the thermostat to Off and the fan to On to speed the melt.
- Lay towels around the furnace or air handler and keep an eye on the drain pan.
- Give it several hours. Heavy ice can take longer.
- Leave the ice alone. Scraping at it can puncture the coil.
Why coils freeze
- A clogged filter or closed registers starving the coil of air
- A weak blower motor or blower capacitor
- A refrigerant leak dropping the coil pressure
- Cooling on a cool, damp evening with a very low set point

(510) 288-2541Mini-splits and heat pumps freeze too
A ductless head that ices up usually has a dirty filter or coil, or it is low on charge. A heat pump with frost on its outdoor coil in winter is fine until that frost turns into a thick block that never clears.
Questions about Iced-Up AC Coil in Oakland
- When can I turn the cooling back on?
- Only if you found and fixed the cause, such as a filthy filter. If the filter was clean, it will freeze again and can harm the compressor.
- Why is water pouring out as it thaws?
- Melting ice can overwhelm the drain pan. Keep towels down and make sure the drain line is open.
